Superfund Life Insurance vs Retail Life Insurance: What’s the Difference?

What is Retail Life Insurance?

Retail life insurance is purchased directly from an insurer, often through an insurance broker. It offers a higher level of flexibility and customisation compared to superfund life insurance.

Key Features:

  • Customised Policies – Tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.
  • Can still be funded through Super – Policies can still be funded through Super.
  • Higher Coverage Levels – Suitable for individuals requiring substantial financial protection.

Benefits of Retail Life Insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage – Policies can be adjusted to meet your exact needs, including higher payout amounts and additional benefits.
  • Faster Claims Processing – Beneficiaries receive payouts directly without superannuation-related delays.
  • Claims assistance – Brokers can help with claims management.
  • Generally cheaper – Retail insurance is generally cheaper than Superfund policies.
  • Flexible payment options – You can continue to cover the premiums via your Super, SMSF or ‘out of pocket’.

What is Superfund Life Insurance?

Superfund life insurance is life insurance offered through your Superannuation account. Most super funds automatically include some level of life insurance, which is paid from your super contributions.

Key Features:

  • Automatic Coverage – Often included by default with your super account.
  • Premiums Paid from Super Balance – No out-of-pocket expenses, as premiums are deducted from your super contributions.
  • Basic Coverage – Typically includes life insurance, TPD (Total and Permanent Disability) cover and sometimes income protection.

Benefits of Superfund Life Insurance:

  • No Immediate Cash Impact – Payments are deducted from your super balance, not your bank account.
  •  Automatic default cover – Insurance is setup with out having to do it yourself.

Drawbacks of Superfund Life Insurance:

  • Limited Coverage – Default policies may not provide sufficient cover for your family’s financial needs.
  • Less Cost-Effective – Although premiums are deducted from your super balance, default group policies often lack the flexibility to optimise costs for individual needs.
  • Restrictions on Beneficiaries – Payouts may be tied to Superannuation rules, which can delay funds reaching your dependents.
  • Impact on Retirement Savings – High premiums reduce your super balance, potentially affecting your long-term retirement funds.

Which Should You Choose?

Consider Retail Life Insurance if:

  • You require tailored, comprehensive coverage to fully protect your financial future.
  • You want support with claims management.
  • You want a more affordable policy.
  • The option to fund your policy through your Super.

Consider Superfund Life Insurance if:

  • You’re happy with default coverage.
  • You’re comfortable with a modest level of protection as a starting point.
